Convert Image to BMP

Turn any image into a BMP (bitmap) file. BMP stores pixel data uncompressed, which makes files large but perfectly faithful. Useful for legacy Windows software, scientific imaging, and embedded systems that expect bitmap input.

Fills transparent areas, because this format has no transparency.

Lossless and uncompressed

BMP saves every pixel exactly. No compression artifacts, no quality loss, even after repeated edits and re-saves.

Universal Windows support

BMP has been a native Windows format since the early 1990s. Every Windows application that handles images can read it.

Embedded and industrial use

Many industrial cameras, scientific instruments, and embedded systems still expect BMP as their default exchange format.

Predictable file structure

BMP has a simple, well-documented binary layout. Useful for developers who need to parse or generate images directly.

How it works

  1. 1Upload your imageClick the upload area or drag a file. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and SVG all work.
  2. 2Pick a background colorOnly matters for source files with transparency. BMP does not support transparency, so transparent pixels are filled. Defaults to white.
  3. 3Download your BMPThe converted file is ready instantly. Files are large because BMP is uncompressed, so expect several MB for typical photos.

FAQ

Why is my BMP file so big?

BMP stores every pixel as raw bytes with no compression. A 1920x1080 photo is around 6MB as BMP, while the same photo as JPG might be 200KB. That is the trade-off for being lossless and simple.

Does BMP support transparency?

The 24-bit BMP format used here does not support transparency. Transparent areas from PNG or WebP sources are filled with the background color you pick. White is the default.

Can I edit BMP in Photoshop or GIMP?

Yes. Both Photoshop and GIMP handle BMP natively. Most legacy editors do too.

When should I use BMP instead of PNG?

Rarely, in modern workflows. PNG is also lossless and much smaller. Use BMP only when the destination explicitly requires it, such as old Windows software, embedded systems, or industrial cameras.

Is BMP good for the web?

No. BMP files are too large and not widely supported in modern browsers. Use JPG, PNG, or WebP for web images.
